Introduction The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is the regulator for nurses and midwives. The Council's main purpose is to protect the public. This is achieved by keeping a register of three parts: for nurses, midwives and specialist community public health nurses (SCPHN). Registration assures the public that a registrant is capable of safe and effective practice without supervision; that the registrant has met the NMC requirements for entry to or staying on the register; and is entitled to use the protected title according to the part or parts of the register on which the registrant holds effective registration (for example, registered nurse, midwife or SCPHN). The NMC also sets standards for education, training, conduct, performance and ethics.
